Pengertian Simile
A simile is a figure of speech that compares two different things that have similar properties or characteristics. The easiest way to identify a simile is to look for the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Simile atau bahasa Indonesianya perumpamaan adalah majas yang membandingkan dua hal berbeda yang memiliki sifat atau karakteristik yang sama. Cara termudah untuk mengidentifikasi perumpamaan adalah dengan mencari kata 'as' atau 'like'.
Cara Mencari Arti Simile
Cara termudah mencari arti simile adalah dengan melihat satu kalimat penuh dan mencari arti yang paling cocok untuk kondisi yang diceritakan oleh kamimat tersebut.
Contonh : Her face became as white as a ghost when she spotted the burglar in her house. Di kalimat ini terdapat simile berupa as "white as a ghost". Seputih hantu, putih ini merujuk pada kulit putih/pucat pada hantu sehingga arti kalimat itu adalah "Wajahnya sangat pucat ketika dia melihat pencuri di rumahnya".
Simile biasanya dapat diartikan dengan melihat kata sifat atau perumpamaan pertama yang digunakan dalam simile.
Contohnya As Black as coal yang berarti sangat hitam.
Selain itu simile juga bisa memiliki dua perumpamaan yang saling bertentangan sehingga artinya adalah kebalikan dari keterangan/kata sifat yang digunakan sebagai perumpamaan pertama, contohnya
as welcome as a skunk at a lawn party : tidak diterima sama sekali.
as clear as mud : sulit dimengerti/tidak jelas.
